Open Window Detection uses sudden changes in temperature or humidity to detect if a window is open and switches off your heating or cooling until the window is closed to save energy.

This process is automated if you have Auto-Assist.

If you don't have Auto-Assist, you can select Turn Heating OFF in Quick Actions in the tado° app. If you’ve activated push notifications, you will receive a notification to switch off your heating or cooling.

How to activate Open Window Detection

To activate the feature, please do the following in the tado° app:

  1. Go to Settings > Open Window Detection.

  2. Select the room you want to activate.

  3. Toggle Open Window Detection on.

  4. Adjust the shut-off duration if needed. By default, tado° switches off for 15 minutes after an open window is detected.

  5. Repeat for all rooms for which you’d like tado° to detect open windows.

How to cancel the open window shut-off

You can also turn your heating/cooling back on in the app or on the devices before this set shut-off time has passed.

To cancel the open window shut-off, you can do the following:

  • In the app, select Cancel.

  • On the devices, turn the knob of the Smart Radiator Thermostat or use the touch arrows on the Smart Thermostat or Smart AC Control V3+.

Please note that only the device that measures the temperature in a room can detect an open window. So, if you have more than one device in the same room, you can choose which of these should be the Measuring Device.

When the set shut-off time has passed or is adjusted manually, tado° blocks the detection of open windows for 15 minutes.

Keep in mind that you won’t get an open window notification if any of the following are true:

  • The heating in the room is set to OFF.

  • The heating in the room is set to ON, but there is no heat request because the inside temperature is above the set temperature.

  • Your Home is in Away Mode at the time the change is detected.

  • The Smart AC Control is set to Dry, Fan, or Auto mode.
