What is Flow Temperature Optimization?

Flow Temperature Optimization is a feature in the tado° app that allows you to manage the temperature of the water flowing through your heating system.

With Flow Temperature Optimization, you never heat your central boiler (or other heat source) to a higher temperature than you actually need. Even if you heat your home to a moderate temperature, it’s still possible to heat unnecessarily at a boiler level if the flow temperature is set too high. By setting a maximum flow temperature, you can make sure your flow temperature is high enough to heat your home to the perfect temperature, but no higher.

How does Automated optimization work?

Auto-Assist users have access to an advanced setting within Flow Temperature Optimization called Automated optimization, which adjusts your maximum flow temperature based on the current weather conditions in your area. All you need to do is enable Automated optimization in the Flow Temperature Optimization screen, and your heat source will follow your home’s calculated optimal flow temperature, even as it fluctuates according to outdoor temperatures.

Automated optimization won’t affect the temperature you set in your home, yet the energy savings can be significant. You can view your savings from Automated optimization at any time in the Energy Savings report in Energy IQ.

Can I use Flow Temperature Optimization for my heating system?

Flow Temperature Optimization is designed to communicate with your boiler or other heat source via OpenTherm, the most common digital room thermostat protocol.

You can use Flow Temperature Optimization if:

  • your heat source supports OpenTherm

  • your heat source is connected to tado° via a Wireless Receiver X or at least one Wired Smart Thermostat X

If you’re not sure whether your heat source supports OpenTherm, you can check with the manufacturer or you can open a chat with tado° support for help.

What if I have multiple heat sources?

If your heating system has multiple heat sources, Flow Temperature Optimization applies to one heat source, which is identified in the app by the serial number of the tado° device that controls it (either your Wireless Receiver X or, if your setup doesn’t have one, the first Wired Smart Thermostat that you installed).

If you have more than one OpenTherm heat source controlled by tado° and you want to change the heat source that is assigned a maximum flow temperature, please open a chat with tado° support and we would be happy to update this for you.

What’s a typical maximum flow temperature?

A typical maximum flow temperature for a boiler is about 50°C - 60°C.

Homes with underfloor heating may only require 35°C - 45°C for optimal efficiency.

If you have already set a maximum flow temperature directly on your heat source, tado° will never exceed that maximum. Even if you set a higher maximum flow temperature in the app, tado° will not override the maximum that you set manually.
