In homes with this heating setup, a room thermostat usually controls the water-based underfloor heating, and radiator thermostats directly control the radiators.
You can replace the existing thermostat with a Smart Thermostat and all or most of the conventional radiator thermostats with Smart Radiator Thermostats to control those rooms individually.
The tado° X product line offers a smart solution for heating setups that rely on a combination of radiators and hydronic underfloor heating. We therefore recommend using tado° X devices for this specific setup, as explained in our article How does tado° X control heating setups with both radiators and water-based underfloor heating?.
You can control these heating systems with one of the following setups:
1. A Smart Thermostat controls the zone valve or pump of the water-based underfloor heating, the Wireless Receiver controls the boiler and Smart Radiator Thermostats are installed in all commonly used rooms (recommended)
The Smart Thermostat controls the zone valve of the underfloor heating system* based on the room temperature measured in the underfloor heating zone. This allows you to control the room independently of all other rooms.
The Wireless Receiver turns the boiler on whenever any tado° devices request heat. You can control the temperature in individual rooms by changing the settings on the Smart Radiator Thermostats**.
You’ll need the following tado° devices:
1x Starter Kit - Wired Smart Thermostat (includes Smart Thermostat and Internet Bridge)
1x Add-on - Wireless Receiver
Add-on - Smart Radiator Thermostats for each room
2. A Smart Thermostat controls the boiler and Smart Radiator Thermostats are installed in all commonly used rooms
The Smart Thermostat turns on the boiler if there is a call for heat in any room. However, the thermostat can only measure the temperature for the room in which it’s located.
No tado° device is connected directly to the underfloor heating valve or pump. So the underfloor heating will always heat up when one of the other tado° devices is calling for heat.
In this setup, the room in which the Smart Thermostat is installed can get warmer than the temperature set on the device itself.
You can control the temperature in individual rooms by changing the settings on the Smart Radiator Thermostats**.
You’ll need the following tado° devices:
1x Starter Kit - Wired Smart Thermostat (includes Smart Thermostat and Internet Bridge)
Add-on - Smart Radiator Thermostats for each room
*If you don’t have a zone valve in your system, you’ll need to install one in the flow line of the underfloor heating system. You can wire the Smart Thermostat directly to this valve. The Smart Thermostat works with nearly all zone valves - high voltage, low voltage, normally open and normally closed. If this setup requires making changes to your existing piping system, we recommend that you seek your local heating engineer’s help. Your installer can refer to our Professional Installer Manuals.
**Any rooms without Smart Radiator Thermostats will also receive heat when the boiler is turned on. We recommend that you set the existing conventional radiator thermostats to frost protection and only turn them up when the room is in use.
