If you have two or more tado° devices of the same type (e.g., two Smart Radiator Thermostats) and you’re experiencing issues with one of them, such as connectivity problems, it could be a device issue or something external, (e.g., the radiator/metal valve your Smart Radiator Thermostat is connected to). To help isolate the cause, we recommend performing a swap test.

The swap test will determine whether the problem is with the tado° hardware or if it’s caused by another external factor.

How to perform the swap test for Smart Radiator Thermostats

  1. Remove the Smart Radiator Thermostats

  • Take both the tado° Smart Radiator Thermostat that is not working correctly (Device A) and a working tado° Smart Radiator Thermostat (Device B) off their radiators.

  • Make sure to remove the mounting brackets and keep them with their original devices to avoid confusion.

2. Loosen the radiator valve pins

  • Before remounting the Smart Radiator Thermostats onto the radiators, manually push the metal pin of each radiator valve inwards a few times firmly.

  • You can use a small coin to help push the pin without hurting your fingers.

3. Reset the Smart Radiator Thermostats

  • Remove the batteries from both devices (Device A and Device B).

  • Wait for 10 seconds before putting the batteries back.

  • Close the battery compartments and wait for 1 minute before remounting the devices. This ensures the devices will calibrate successfully.

4. Swap the Smart Radiator Thermostats

  • Mount Device A onto the radiator where Device B was originally installed.

  • Mount Device B onto the radiator where Device A was originally installed.

5. Observe the devices

  • Over the next 24 hours, observe whether the problem persists.

  • Check if the issue with Device A is now happening on the radiator where Device B was installed.

  • Alternatively, check if the issue has moved to Device B when mounted on Device A’s original radiator.

If the problem persists after performing the swap test, please use the tado° chatbot for help. Select the round orange icon in the bottom right-hand corner to open a chat.

To help us assist you, we’ll ask you to send us the following details:

  • The serial numbers of both devices (A and B).

  • The specific time and date when you swapped the devices.

  • The result of the test: Did the issue follow the device or stay with the radiator?
This information will help us determine whether the issue is with the tado° hardware or the radiator/valve.

You can perform the swap test with any of your tado° devices, if you have at least two of the same type in your tado° account. Simply adjust the steps to suit your specific devices.
